This interior still life painting on wood is in excellent condition with the colors fresh and all paint intact. The scene depicted within the artwork is of a location in the Rhineland area of Germany. "Bad Durkheim" is a tourist town which is noted for its curative spas and health resorts. "Pfalz" is a reference to the Rhineland area. There is little information regarding the artist Heinrich Haass other than that he was born in Munich, Germany on or about the date of 1899. Haass emigrated to the United States and was active in New York City during the1920's. Many craftspeople who emigrated to the United States during this time period were hired for their artistic skills but not solely for the purpose of painting artworks. The artists worked in various manners of what today is known as "interior decorating or design". The craftsmen may have decorated furniture, made woodwork or painted murals and designs. The painting which is the subject of this appraisal may have beeen given to the couple whose name is written on the reverse of the painting as a payment for services or rent. The beautiful, ornate oak frame appears to be original to the artwork and may have been crafted by the artist.

This pen and ink drawing is in excellent condition. The colors are fresh and
there are no visible tears or flaking. The frame is also in excellent condition.

fireplaces, heaters or baseboard heat nor near any heat-producing appliances.
These conditions will hasten the deterioration of your artwork and may cause

The artwork that you have submitted for appraisal is an original pen and ink
drawing that has been created by the contemporary, Native-American artist
Gerals Peter Jemison (1945-) United States. The artist was born in New York and
received his art education at Buffalo State College. Jemson was active with
regard to his artistic career in New York City and Schenectady where he was an art educator. While he was located in New York City, Jemison directed the
gallery program of the American Indian Community House. Works by Jemison have been displayed in gallery exhibitions including the Fenimore Museum,
Cooperstown; Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo and several privately-owned galleries located in the southwestern United States. Peter Jemison represents the Seneca Nation of Indians on repatriation issues and he serves on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Subject matter for this artist most often is that of Native-American culture and legend and animals. One important
series of artworks by Jemison were the "paper bag" paintings that he completed
while in New York. The paper bag series are within the collections of The Heard
Museum, Phoenix, and The Denver Art Museum, Denver.
The artwork that you possess is hand-signed and dated by the artist at the lower right-hand corner of the drawing with a signature that is representative of the
artist Peter Jemison.
This artwork appears to be an original oil painting on masonite board that may have been created by American artist Philip Guston (1913 - 1980) b. Montreal, Canada. The painting is similar in style, subject matter and media to catalogued and recognized works by Guston collectively known as "the hoods" series. The bulk of this series of artworks was created while Guston was in Woodstock and away from his critics in New York City. The "hoods", in my opinion, are the most intriguing artworks by Guston; and they are the topic of much debate and discussion in the art world. Guston has indicated that the paintings are self-portraits and that he is the figure beneath the hoods. The hooded figures appeared in earlier works by Guston (Conspirators, 1932) and Guston has mentioned that he was affected by the Ku Klux Klan when he was a young boy living in Los Angeles. This group of artworks has common elements within them; large pink fingers, cigars, nail-studded boards, light bulbs; all rendered in a cartoon-like fashion. The works were titled and untitled, signed and unsigned. The "hoods" paintings made their debut in 1970 at the Marlborough Gallery, New York City. The paintings were not received kindly, especially by the art critics and reviewers. There may be quite a number of Guston's hoods paintings. Thirty-six of the paintings are within the MoMA collection and the McKee Gallery hosted an exhibit showing forty-nine of the artworks by Guston. Others appear at auction. There is no visible signature of the artist on the painting. The present owner of the painting has stated that the painting was previously a part of a storage locker contents, and that the storage locker was located in Woodstock, New York. Unfortunately, the present owner has no documentation regarding the purchase from the locker. With no more information or documentation than what was provided by the owner, I could not definitely designate the painting of a "hood" as created by American artist Philip Guston (1913 - 1980). For the purpose of the appraisal, the artwork was evaluated as an original oil painting on board that has not been signed by the artist and that may be attributed to or created in the manner of Philip Guston. For the purpose of this appraisal, the artwork is evaluated as an unsigned, original oil painting on masonite board created in the manner of or attributed to American artist Philip Guston (1913 - 1980). If the painting was definitely the work of Philip Guston, then the values would be significantly higher; between one-half million to over one million dollars at auction and more than these amounts at retail.

Rod Brown was born in Columbia, South Carolina and currently resides in Washington, D.C. He has Illustrated many publications, three of which are “Freedom’s a-Callin Me”, author Ntozake Shange; “From Slave Ship to Freedom Road”, author Julius Lester; and “We Troubled the Waters”, author Ntozake Shange. Brown’s original artworks are most often completed as historical, narrative paintings of African-American experiences regarding slavery in Colonial America, the Civil Rights Era and contemporary themes regarding African-American culture today. Caravan Stopping by a Waterhole
This beautiful Orientalist painting of a caravan stopping by a waterhole was completed by Charles-Théodore Frère, born in Paris on June 24, 1814.
The painting was sold to a Chicago gallery for several thousand dollars.
Frère is most known as one of the important Orientalist painters. Orientalism is a style which depicts cultures from the near and far East, highlighting their customs, daily life, architecture. This has been a very interesting artwork to appraise. There were many ethical questions and suppositions to consider in order to arrive at a fair and complete evaluation of your painting by Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) Austria. It is hard to separate Hitler the artist from Hitler the leader of Nazi Germany when considering the artwork's desirability to collectors. If the admirer of one of Hitler's paintings does not know who the artist is, would he bid to the bitter end of an auction sale with a collector of militaria who wants the artwork for reason of the artist's notoriety rather than for the artist's technique? One growing area for militaria buyers is that of artwork by World War II leaders. The next supposition to be addressed was that this is a print that was not personally authorized nor managed by Hitler for reproduction, as were his postal card productions which have a value of up to $10,000.00. It is not a numbered edition; nor is it signed by the artist. And as you have stated, the number of prints that were pressed from this original watercolor is not known. So the category of your print would be considered an unsigned, unlimited lithographic edition of Adolf Hitler's original untitled water-color painting of Vienna with a view of Saint Charles, the Wienfluss and Heldenbrucke. The original was created by Hitler during his Vienna Period of 1907-1912. The original paintings from this period of Hitler's art career sell for anywhere between $20,000 to $50,000 and undisclosed sales of even higher amounts of money. An interesting fact regarding Hitler's Vienna paintings was that he was rejected twice from entering the Academy of Fine Arts of Vienna. He had quite a fascination for architecture and most of his subject matter were public buildings, especially churches. You have a Certificate of Authentication that is assigned to your relative's original painting by Adolf Hitler. The authenticator, Peter Jahn, was the art consultant to the German Embassy in Vienna in 1937 and he was responsible for finding and relocating Hitler's artworks. There is no doubt that the painting is authentic and no doubt that your relative is the fair and legitimate owner of the painting. My evaluation is on the conservative side given the above information, but I feel at auction the final value would be much higher than the pre-auction estimate. I also feel because of the growing interest for artwork created by military leaders, especially those of Adolf Hitler, that the value of your print will increase in the future.
